I just realized that it I never made a post last year for the anniversary of Collin's passing and I feel pretty bad about that. Of course we never forget to honor Collin at this time. I may have not made a post but we still gather in his name around this time of year to visit his grave site and pray before heading out to his old job for dinner followed by a "Collin appropriate movie."

I can't lie and say that it hurts just as much every day as much as it did back then. When it first happened, the pain was almost unbearable and the tears flowed every day for many days. As they say though, time heals all wounds and while I don't think I'll ever feel completely fine about Collin not being around, I don't feel those sharp emotional pains nearly as often as I used to. However when this time of year comes, much of that pain does return and I start to wish all over again that I had more time with Collin. I wish he was still here with us. I wish I could still stop by his house and watch movies or play some Xbox. I wish we could sit and down some Killian's Irish Red together. I wish he could have known my sons, the first of whom was born just about a day after Collin's funeral. Mostly I wish we could have him back just long enough for him to know how much he meant to all of us. I sometimes find myself wandering in thought going down roads where I feel I can somehow will it all to be different. As if I could look hard enough and somehow find him alive and with us again. Then reality draws me back and I realize how ridiculous I'm being. And that's when my throat closes up and the tears flow all over again.

Why can I not let go? I'm not quite sure but I think it's mostly because I don't want to. The pain of missing him somehow makes him feel closer and so I'd rather be subject to that pain than to feel nothing for him.

I stopped at the cemetery again today since it's the actual anniversary date and I met Collin's brother Kevin there. We've never spoken before so it was really good to talk to him and get his perspective and thoughts on things. Of course, as I expected, the pain he and the rest of the family have felt dwarfs mine. I feel selfish for even feeling as bad as I do in comparison. Despite the pain it was still good to hear what he had to say. It felt like I was learning a little more about Collin even though he's gone.

Two years

It has been two years and as I learned at the cemetery yesterday, the tears can still come easily. I am confident that my friend is either in paradise or well on his way, but that confidence doesn't always stop the pain.

Well the news is out of course and it couldn't really be more ugly than it is. Chris Benoit murdered his wife and son before taking his own life. And yet there is some part of me that feels more sorrow than disgust. All around I read about people who were filled with admiration for Chris Benoit. And now that admiration in them has been replaced with disgust. For some reason I just don't quite feel the same way. As bad as I feel for Nancy and Daniel Benoit, I just trust for some reason (I suppose because of their innocence in this matter) that they are at peace. But Chris.... my heart is just filled with pity for his soul. None but God know the state of Chris's soul but I'd like to think that there wasn't a shred of a rational thought in the man when he did the horrible things he did. There are reports that over the last couple of months or so, he became truly paranoid. Perhaps in some sick way he felt that what he was doing was somehow justified in some odd way. I read one article that indicated most murder/suicide situations were perpetrated by men against their families and that in many of these cases, the man is delusional enough to think that he and his loved ones are actually better off gone from this world. Could Benoit have thought this?

Maybe I feel all of these things because I don't want to accept the truth. Maybe I'm looking for some excuse no matter how feeble it might seem. In the end though, God desires that all of His children be saved and so we should desire the same thing. I truly hope that Chris's last thought on this earth was "Forgive me Lord."

Chris Benoit Dead

Today Chris Benoit was found dead in his home along with his wife and son. I’m in a bit of a state of shock over the whole thing as I’m sure are many others. I haven’t watched wrestling in a couple years now but there was a time when I’d get together with the gang and watch wrestling as often as we possibly could. We’d all pack into my room every Monday and Thursday night for Raw and Smackdown. We’d all get together for pretty much every pay-per-view WWF/WWE, WCW,and ECW offered and we did this for years. We all had our favorites but there wasn’t really any debate about who was the best. We all pretty much knew that it was Chris Benoit. He didn’t seem to get caught up in the whacky bull crap of the wrestling world. He just did his job and he did it better than anyone else. He was the best and now he’s gone. I pray to God that he and his family are at peace.

A year ago

It's been about a year. Come this Friday my son will be a year old and I cannot believe how fast the time has flown by. Considering the complications that accompanied his arrival, I can consider myself a very lucky man. Without going into too many details or without being too melodramatic, let me say that my wife and son came very close to not making it through that day. And yet this post is not about my wife or son.

The happiness of knowing my family is OK is tinged with sadness. Collin's passing has left a scar that I don't think will ever go away and truth be told I wouldn't want it too. When I was a kid and my brother and Collin were good friends, I used to look up to him. I used to always try and tag along with my brother's friends when they went to the arcade or the movies but mostly I wanted to hang out with Collin. Being a young kid, I thought he was "cool." As the years went by and I had my own friends, it was still great to run into my brother's friends and play a game of Golden Axe with Collin or catch up on things when we met in passing. Years later Amy and I started to see him on a regular basis as he waited our table almost every Saturday night. Eventually he invited me over and we started to hang out on a pretty regular basis. Even then it struck me that I was now pretty good friends with someone I looked up to as a kid. I somehow felt proud to have him as friend. I felt proud when I went to the theater to see him star in one of his plays. I felt proud when he spoke of his "brothers" Matt (my brother), Vin (our good friend), and me.

I still look back with pain at the emails we traded back and forth searching for some sign of what he was experiencing and cringing when I see one. I see his email to me asking me to come over on this day or that and I see my response that I couldn't make it, and it hurts even if I had a good reason not to visit. It hurts me to look back on my last visit to his house and remember how he looked "off" somehow, like he was under the weather. It hurts to remember that during that visit I fell asleep while watching movies and headed home a bit early because I was just too tired. It hurts because I walked out of his front door thinking that it would only be another few weeks before I walked back in.

When I pick up the Xbox controller to play Halo, I find myself wishing he was at my side. When I see some crazy movie I find myself wishing I could email him about one of the funny lines. I find myself wishing that that I was sitting in his office trying to fix his old laptop for the tenth time. I find myself wishing I just got to know him better in the last couple of years when we were truly good friends.

Last Thursday was the anniversary of his passing. Matt, Vin, and I celebrated the day by saying a rosary at his memorial, grabbing dinner at Ruby Tuesday's (complete with the Killian's in a frosted mug), and finishing the night with one of his favorite movies. After we parted ways and headed home, I drove through the cemetery one more time and saw the lantern that marks his resting place. To see it lit was comforting. It somehow reminded me how proud I was... How proud I still am to be Collin Kiernan's friend.

The Sixth Sense

I'm watching "The Sixth Sense" on TV right now. Man that was a great movie but the kid can't act to save his life. I don't know why people thought he was any good. He was horrible. Hollyood needs to start finding some kid actors that actually act like kids.

Why is it that they update their site like once a decade? It just seems like a major company in a very dynamic business would have a more dynamic web site. It's sort of an ugly site too. Insomniac has always been a sort of sister company to them and they seem to be a lot better on treating their fans to a pretty nice site.

Kotaku has a clip of Motorstorm for the PS3. This was supposed to be one of the big PS3 games of the year. They even released an awesome trailer of supposed gameplay at the last E3. Now if the above link is the first you're seeing of this game then I'm sure it looks like a pretty game to you and make no mistake. It is a pretty game. It's much better than the demo I played at Target a while back. But look at the E3 trailer or better yet, look at this comparison video. Does Sony know why people are taking such delight every time they goof? It's because they're pretty much caught lying on a regular basis and then they get all arrogant about it when someone calls them out on their claims. If the PS3 came out a year ago and was $200 cheaper then I'd own one (or perhaps I'd even buy th $600 behemoth if I weren't married with a kid and the proud owner of a lot of responsibility now). The fact that Naughty Dog and Insomniac are exclusive Sony developers makes it painful to not own one but Sony is such a nutjob of a company that I sometimes wonder if their PS3 blunders would somehow be fatal to any possibility of a PS4.

This burns me up! People are going around saying that the Pope is against video games. Gamers are used to being attacked for one reason or another so they jumped on the anti-Catholic bandwagon when they heard that the Pope was supposedly against video games.

Read his quote:
"'Any trend to produce programs and products -- including animated films and video games -- which in the name of entertainment exalt violence and portray anti-social behavior or the trivialization of human sexuality is a perversion,' "

He's not against games. He's against any form of entertainment that glorifies violence and perverse themes. Is there a problem with that stand? No way! He's the Pope for crying out loud!

My last post mentioned Starcraft and I linked to the Starcraft Ghost Wikipedia page.... And on that page is a reference to one Keith R. A. DeCandido (he wrote one of the Starcraft novels).

Let me tell you something about my taste in books. It doesn't take a genius to write a book that will please me. In fact most of my reading is from the "Somewhat Cheesy Fantasy" genre and since I'm a Warcraft nut, I've read most of the books that take place in the Warcraft world and I thought they were pretty good. Not just for books based on video games... they were pretty good books in general. So one evening, in my thirst for more Warcraft books, I picked up Cycle of Hatred by our friend Keith R. A DeCandido. This book has the honor of being the first book I ever threw in the garbage while I was reading it. It was freaking awful! Normally I would reserve judgment of someone's writing skills for when I read more than just 2/3 of one of his or her books but I couldn't do it with this guy. His writing is like reading the script to an episode of Romper Room mixed with some sort of political correctness handbook. I should have known he was an ass by the use of the double middle initial in his name (one can only assume that the R.A. stands for 'Raging Ass' or something like that). Anyway if you happen to be in the mood for a good book then check the front cover for this guy's name. If it's there then I fully encourage you to burn the book immediately! You can tell the manager of the book store that I said it's ok.

Theres a demo for the new Def Jam Icon game coming out this week. But I'm not posting this to generate any interest. Sure I loved the first two Def Jam games but when details started to emerge about the 3rd installment, my level of interest dropped like a rock covered in fat people. The best thing about the old games (the Aki based fighting engine) has been replaced with an all new engine. Now will the new one be good? Who knows? But the Aki engine was what made Def Jam and more than a couple of wrestling games before it so damn good. So beware. If you see this game in the stores then don't jump at it without playing it first.

In case of fire

There's a sign on the first floor of my apartment right by the elevator that says "In case of fire, use stairs." Yes it's on the first floor. So if you happen to come by and visit me, and the building is a raging inferno, please use the stairs to come up to my place.

I can understand that sign being on ever other floor... But why the first floor? Who the heck is going to come for a visit with full knowledge that the building is on fire? Maybe some firemen? Well they should know the rules. If a fireman needs a sign like that then I don't want him in charge of saving us.

A creepy animal

I'm not a huge fan of ocean swimming as it is. Actually that's not true. I love swimming in the waves. It's just that I've been salt water fishing and I've seen tons of documentaries about the ocean and if there's one thing I know about salt water, it's that it is home to real life monsters. I don't meant that they're really big (some are I guess). I mean there are real monsters there! That's what I don't like about ocean swimming. It's the constant thought that somewhere near me is some crazy beast who just happens to be in the mood for some human flesh. Yeah there are some weird creatures on land but for the most part they all seem to have at least some part of their body that looks familiar in some way. Not in the ocean though. There are some seriously f'd up looking animals out there and more than a few of them have multiple rows of razor sharp teeth. That just seems to be God's way of saying "Stay on the land people."

This looks kind of cool. I've always found Mortal Komat moves to be hard to memorize for some reason. In Street Fighter 2, the controls seemed to mimic the motions the character would go through to perform a special move. In MK it never seemed this way for a lot of the special attacks. Maybe the Wii specific controls would be easier for me to memorize. We'll see. I'll probably rent this game or maybe even request it as a birthday present.

Burning Crusade

Well the World of Warcraft: Burning Crusade is out and the wife and I have played gobs of it already. I wasn't all that excited about in the weeks leading up to the launch and honestly a big part of me was starting to lose some interest in WoW. Well throw that out the window. The expansion pack is awesome! I love all of the new content. I wasn't too excited about the Blood Elves or Draenei and Outland just looked boring to me. But they're all damn cool! The new dungeons are perfect for me. They look great, they drop great gear, and they don't take all that long too complete while still providing a challenge. I'm having a blast so far!

I always wanted to try Paper Mario and now that they're adding more platform elements, I'll likely be purchasing the game. I'm sure they'll do some cool stuff with the power of the Wii and the cool graphical style of Paper Mario. I do hope it's more platform and less RPG though. There's a lack of truly great old school Nintendo-style platform/adventure games out there. In fact the best ones in recent years were all on the PS2 (in my opinion). It's hard to top the Jak and Daxter, Sly Cooper, and Ratchet and Clank series.

I'm a fat man

Yeah I'm fat. I'm not that tall at all (about 5'5) and I'm certainly no lightweight. I roll in at about 180 lbs which really isn't so good for my frame. Before my son was born, I was doing well. I was eating right and exercising all of the time and I got myself down to 169 lbs from a high of 186 lbs. I was feeling really good but I knew I had more to do before I got to what I feel my ideal weight should be (I'm shooting for 155 or so). Well that all went out the window the week Joey arrived. Now I've gained nearly all of the weight back and it's time to lose it for good. So one of my goals this year is to weigh 155 lbs by Christmas. Why am I telling you this? Well I guess it's my way of putting on record so I'll feel guilted into actually following through with my plan.

Virtua Fighter 5 Battle Compilation

I was watching the trailer for Virtua Fighter 5 Battle Compilation - over at Kotaku and it looks really nice. One thing though... Have they changed that game since VF2 or 3? I mean the animations and moves all look the same to me. Heck a lot of the animations and moves look exactly like they did in VF1! I guess I'm all for not fixing something that isn't broken but come on. The series was never so good that they can get by with this forever. Yeah I know they add new fighters once in a while but it seems like every other fighting game out there. Add some quick sexy female fighter along with some sort of fighting monk and you have yourself a fighting game sequel.

Wilson's Barbeque

If you live anywhere near Fairfield CT and you like BBQ then you have to visit Wilson's Barbeque. The food can be insanely good and they make a few of their own sauces that taste like they're imported from Heaven. The place is very small but it's themed to look like an old Southern home complete with the front porch. There's nothing like having some of their Eastern Carolina Pulled Pork with a hunk of corn bread doused in their Holy Chipotle sauce while listening to some blues tunes.

You can read the news posting from the link above (click on the title) but it's not necessary. It's really the same old crap but it just seems to be escalating. I don't buy it if anyone says that it's because we're in Iraq. I'm not some sort of huge supporter of the war, I honestly don't know what to think about it. But I do know this. The extremem Muslims in the Middle East are off their collective rocker. They're nuts! They hate anyone different from them (especially Jews and Americans), they always have, and they always will. They'll use anything as an excuse to act out on that hatred. It just makes me think that this really is the start of World War III... maybe even something bigger.

Apparently Street Fighter 2: Hyper Fighting is now one of the games you can get on Xbox Live. That will definitely take a chunk out of the time I've been pumping into World of Warcraft lately. The online play is going to be downright crazy! Of course don't get me wrong. I fully expect that WoW will still dominate my gaming time but for those 20 minute gaming sessions it will be SF2.

Life goes on but not without its scars

Well the last time I really posted anything was when I posted about Collin's passing. Since then I've once again let the blog gather dust so I figured I should clear the dust and pick up where I left off.

I haven't posted any more stories about Collin in the comments below simply because most of them are just situations that might have a personal meaning to me and would be hard to express in words while still expressing any real meaning to anyone else. It does not mean that he's out of my mind though. While the pain has been somewhat dulled, I still think about him every day.

Yesterday I went to visit Collin's grave. It feels weird to type such a thing about a friend of mine. I know I'm not a kid anymore but I'm certainly not old enough to be visiting the graves of my friends.

There are no standing headstones at this cemetery (that's the rule apparently) so the markers are either flat monuments or just simple markers or a sign of some sort. Collin's was a lamp with solar strips to charge the light for when the sun sets. At first I thought it was odd to have a working lamp as a marker since cemetery visiting hours are only during the day but then I thought that it was comforting knowing that his grave would be lit at night or on a dark and stormy day even though there would be nobody there to see it. It actually reminded me of a poem he wrote.

The passing of a friend

I'm sure anyone who reads this page will most likely hear the news from me but tonight I learned that a very good friend has passed away. He was taken far too young and very suddenly. I've lost loved ones in the past but every time it has been an older member of the family who has lived a full life and left behind people happier to have known them. Collin was a young man and his sudden passing makes it so tough to deal with. I've known him since before high school and still saw him pretty regularly. I know the pain I'm experiencing is nothing compared to how much his family must be hurting... it makes me feel like I'm being selfish like I'm feeling bad for myself. I just try to remember that Christ wept when Lazarus died even though He was to raise Lazarus moments later. It's good to grieve for those who pass on but I have to believe that one day I will see my friend again... I will shake his hand and greet him in the paradise prepared for us since the beginning of time. I hope and pray that he has been greeted with the words we all hope to hear at the end of things... "Well done... well done My good and faithful servant. Now enter into the joy of your Master's house."

I love how the media claims to be unbiased and fair and yet they get caught with their pants down all of the time (like the Dan Rather forged memo story). I've been trying to stay out of politics lately but this stuff is just too much to let go. All the media (including entertainment) does is try to ram crap down your throat and hope you'll be too stupid to realize what they're doing. They're treating us like little kids. Also I may be a conservative but both sides try this garbage at times and it makes me sick. The one thing I don't mind is when these people admit that they are biased but I'm tired of these supposed intellectual elites who try and mold the thoughts and opinions of the people with their crap reporting.

Happy New Year everyone.
I've said it before and I'll say it again... I hate New Years as far as holidays go. It probably doesn't help that it follows Christmas, the king of all days in the year. It also probably doesn't help that it falls at the very end of my annual Christmas vacation, thereby signaling the end to my Christmas bliss. It's a pretty depressing day in my opinion. Of course that doesn't mean the parties aren't fun. The wife and I had a pretty darn good time with the crew. We had some great food, watched some insane shows and we played a game of Scene It (thanks Dan). It just goes to show you that even a crappy day can be made good by means of good company, the chomping of good foods, and the imbibing of powerful adult beverages.

Sounds of the Seasons

Our cable company has all of those digital music stations and my favorite one is Sounds of the Season. They play Halloween music around Halloween and Christmas music around Christmas etc. What bugs me is that they always stop playing Christmas music early. I turned the station on very early this morning and they were playing Wil Smith's 'Gettin Jiggy with It.' They couldn't wait a few weeks to play that? I can understand all the easy listening stations going back to their regular music early because they have sponsors and money to make (although I think December 26th is way too early). But Sounds of the Season doesn't have sponsors and it doesn't make money on its own. There is no other holiday or season coming up at any time in the near future which has its own musical genre. Why not stick with Christmas? It's like there's this war on my ability to celebrate Christmas until the end of January or so like I try to do every year. I do have my own personal stash of Christmas music but for some reason it just doesn't feel the same as it does when you know the rest of the world is listening to Christmas music too. It's some weird sense of community Christmas spirit.

Why is it that Hollywood assumes that every third person is gay? I've known a couple gay people in my life (two pretty well... one was cool... one was a total jerk freak). You know what? I'm pretty sure they weren't the type that 'won the West.' Why make a gay cowboy movie? You know the reason... To get on the nerves of the average red state American. The good thing is that no matter how many awards the movie gets, it won't make a lot of cash and cash rules Hollywood in the end.

The movie stars gay butt cowboys Jake Gyllenhaal and Heath Ledger. Ledger has the dubious honor of being in Four Feathers, one of the worst movies ever made. I never quite liked Gyllenhaal anyway. Bubble Boy was pretty funny but it seems like the only other character he could pull off is a gay cowboy I suppose. Here's the kicker. The director is Ang Lee (or should it be 'Bang Lee'). Thanks Ang... You ruined the Hulk and now you're trying to ruin cowboys.

I feel like I need to watch a realy modern cowboy movie like Open Range

I think it's really encouraging that a pro-life movie has been made (even if it's only 35 minutes long). I really strongly believe a couple of things about abortion.

1) Most people who say they are pro-life would not be if they were to truly educate themselves on what abortion really is

and

2) Based on sheer numbers, abortion is quite possibly the greatest human tragedy ever. Yes you have stuff like the Holocaust but keep in mind that there are around 3000 abortions every day!

Some people will say that the pro-life movement is hypocritical since many pro-lifers are pro-capital punishment or for the war in Iraq. This doesn't compare in my book. While I'm not a big fan of the death penalty or the war the deaths that these have caused do not even come close to the number of deaths caused by abortions over the years. Give yourself an honest education regarding abortion and then tell me you're really still pro-abortion.
